Subject: Frank Gore

I'd like to see your thoughts on Frank Gore. Gore was the starter before he went down with Willis McGahee as his backup. Also, with the 2 knee injuries, I know I have heard it takes about a full two years to come back 100%, as you can see how Edge James has done this recent year. If he would have stayed for his final year, I would have predicted him to have a great final year and be a lock for the 1st round. But coming out this year and the depth at the RB position for 2005 draft, I see a late 2nd or 3rd round pick, maybe even later.... possibly to the Eagles?? What do you think?

Lou: I wrote about Frank Gore earlier this month, at which point I projected him as a second or third round running back. Looks like you and I are on the same page as far as that projection goes. With the Eagles and the need (or lack thereof) of another RB, if he slips to the bottom of round three, that might be what Philly will look to do. I could see Philadelphia shoring up its defensive line, linebackers and offensive line first, which it should be able to do with three picks in the first two rounds. There will still be quality RBs available later in the draft, perhaps including Gore. And I agree that another year at Miami would have helped his draft status, but it's hard to blame him for passing up the money after all the injury problems he's already faced in college.

Re: (nothing)

Hey Lou...I've written you before on your other website. I am your cousin (Matthew Tant's Mom). I saw where you had his picture on the other website and I wondered if you knew he was in the draft? He is listed on several NFL draft sites rated anywhere from #1 fullback to #13. I was just wondering if you were going to make a list of the players and where he might fall in your opinion. He is currently at a training camp but doing independent studies so he can graduate from Vanderbilt in May. Keep up the good work...your websites are great!

Lou: Yes, in case any of you out there are looking for a potential bias in my coverage, here's one for you: Matthew Tant of Vanderbilt is my cousin. He's projected to go anywhere from round 3 to round 5 in the draft. He's faster than most fullbacks (4.5 range), but slightly shorter (5'11") than the other top prospects. The only other fullback that has his speed is Kyle Eckel of Navy, but he has a military commitment that will prevent his entry into the NFL for no less than two years. Tant is definitely not a traditional fullback, but he has the potential to catch passes a la Larry Centers. Whether Tant can develop into the blocker that Centers was as a pro will need to be determined, since Tant was not called on to do much lead blocking while at Vanderbilt.
