Subject: Redskins Draft

Hey Lou,
Great site and I really enjoy your insight. I am a die-hard Redskins fan and since we need help at almost every defensive position, I was wondering if you think there will be any takers allowing the Skins to trade down and add some draft picks they have given away in the past? If so, what area do you think they would go first, D-line or Secondary?

Lou: The Redskins could use some talented rookies, and trading down would be wise. However, that is not in the nature of Daniel Snyder, and I anticipate that Washington will stand pat and go for who they feel is the best player in the draft.

The Redskins could go CB, considering that they had to bring in Mike Rumph when their secondary had injury problems in the pre-season. Defensive tackle would also be a good idea as an option, depending on what talent is on the board when Washington drafts. since the Redskins used a second-rounder to bring in OLB Rocky McIntosh in last year's draft, I doubt they'd hit that spot again with a high pick. Andre Carter has been a major bust at DE, but the Redskins are on the hook for his contract and might be hesitant to take a DE in the first round.

Subject: Jets Draft and Kenny Irons

Dear Mr. Pickney,

After looking at your mock draft, I felt that for the most part is was logical except two things I personally disagree with. One is the Jets taking Jarrett with their pick. Although I feel that Jarrett is a proven college player, Coles is still a great receiver, McCareins is fairly reliable, plus Cotchery is have a breakout season. They also have Brad Smith as well. I personally see them picking either a RB if they do not have confidence in what Houston, Barlow, or Washington can do for them, a TE since Baker has not developed as expected, or a DT since Van Oelhoffen is in his mid 30's. Also, I disagree with Kenny Irons being on the draft board and Marshawn Lynch is not there. Although he's a junior, he lead the Pac-10 in rushing yards and is projected to leave college a year early. He also had more rushing yards, all-purpose yards, and TD's then Irons as well. What is your reasoning behind this? Do you feel that he won't come into the draft this year?

Lou: Marshawn Lynch has had a great season for Cal, and he certainly has the all-around physical tools to excel in the NFL (5'11", 215, 4.5 40) and be a first round pick.

I have Kenny Irons ahead of Lynch at the moment, but really the two are interchangable for the second RB spot (behind Adrian Peterson) and Lynch has 15 pounds more than Irons (both are the same height and almost identical on speed.) The Jets need RB help, and Lynch would be a nice addition to the team. When I make up my next Mock, it's entirely possible that Lynch will be in there.

Of course, Lynch could return to Cal for his senior season, but as his stock rises the odds of that decrease more and more.

Subject: How will Matt Millen screw up the '07 draft for the Lions?

Hi Lou,

It's way early, but assuming Detroit has the No.1 pick next year, what are the odds they could trade down? I'm really not sold on Brady Quinn (Looks like Joey Harrington pt.2 to me)and the Lions have so many holes (like an entire offensive line) to fill, it seems it would be wise for them to trade down and acquire extra picks. Is Brady Quinn really enough bait for a team to want to trade up and get him? Just wondered what your thoughts were on this.

Lou: For the rap that Philly fans get, Detroit Lions fans are a pessimistic bunch. I can't say I blame them, though, but it's funny how this is hardly ever mentioned by the mainstream press.

Brady Quinn took a pounding early on in his Notre Dame career, but you never heard him complain or saw him show any frustration about his situation. By the end of his run, he was leading Notre Dame on game-winning drives and helping the Irish land a Sugar Bowl berth.

Quinn and Harrington both are 6'4" 225, and I've read some comparisons made of them. But Quinn has shown a level of grit, determination, and ability to handle pressure that I haven't seen out of a college QB in recent years. Quinn runs a 4.7, and as he showed in that one long run against USC, he isn't afraid to take off with the ball.

Moreover, Quinn spent the past two years running a pro-style offense under ND head coach Charlie Weiss. His slow release is a concern, and that will need to be corrected on the next level, where the speed of the game changes everything. He needs to improve how quick he reads defenses, but with his level of intelligence, I think that's something that can be improved upon.

I'd personally like to see Quinn go to the Lions, if for nothing else because of him playing against his brother-in-law, A.J. Hawk, twice a year. Packers at Lions next Thanksgiving (if that's the matchup) with Quinn vs. Hawk as a sub-plot could be interesting, no? FOX could show endless shots of Laura (Quinn) Hawk looking concerned in the stands. If it actually plays out that way, expect to see a million feature stories about it. Just remember that you heard it here first.

Unfortunately for the Lions, if dangling the #1 pick because of Quinn is an idea, it will be a tough sell. Check the past mailbags on here for all of the Raiders fans who have implored me to not list a QB for the Raiders, since Al Davis does what he wants and hasn't taken a first round QB since Todd Marinovich in 1991 (and when has Davis ever traded up for the #1 pick, in all of his years of drafting?) The Cardinals have Matt Leinart; the Titans have Vince Young; Washington has Todd Campbell. I'm not sure that Cleveland or Houston would be willing to trade up to get Quinn, but you never know. If Detroit lands the #1 pick, they would need to find a trading partner with the Top 5, as beyond that it becomes quite complicated to do from a salary cap standpoint.

If Detroit doesn't want Quinn, they could go with a player like Clemson DE Gaines Adams. I presume that the Lions won't go after Adrian Peterson, but I also presumed that the Lions wouldn't use three straight Top 10 first round picks on WRs (2003-2005), and I was wrong about that.
