how much do you see a player like Florida State CB Antonio Cromartie rising after putting up great proday numbers?

Lou: I think that Cromartie has the potential to be a first rounder, likely in the second half, though at this point I have him pegged as an early second round pick. Cromartie going to Houston at #33 doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility if he's still on the board. Before his injury, that Florida State defense was fun to watch with both him and Ernie Sims on board, and I'm not an FSU fan. But I can certainly appreciate and enjoy great athleticism and outstanding performance, and Cromartie brought both prior to his injury. If the rumored trade of Seattle sending its first round pick to the NY Jets for DE John Abraham is consummated, I could see the Jets taking Cromartie at #31. But with so many variables involved, a player like Cromartie has a pretty wide range at this point.

If there's one thing going for Cromartie, it's that teams are always looking for quality corners. He's likely the fourth corner on many boards (behind CB/S hybrid Michael Huff, Jimmy Williams and Tye Hill), but it's possible that some teams might rank him ahead of Hill.. and possibly even Williams in some circumstances. But that knee injury is going to stop him from making any major moves up the draft board -- at least that's my expectation.

Subject: Panthers draft pick

Lou,

Do you think linebacker would be a more pressing need for the Panthers than TE, with the great TE's in this draft, WR if one of the few good ones falls as far as 27?

Also, do you think they could be planning on drafting a HB since they didn't pursue any of the veteran HB's this offseason? Deshaun is pretty prone to injury.

Lou: First off, I had to paste the e-mail in here to be able to read it clearly, as it was sent to me in bright green text. Please don't do that, people. I don't ask much of you. The site is free. I love your e-mails, but not when my eyes hurt from reading them.

I could see the Panthers going for a RB on day one, maybe the likes of Brian Calhoun from Wisconsin or someone similar. With DeShaun Foster and Nick Goings, the Panthers have two good RBs, though after the injury bug of 2005 one would think that some fresh blood as a third stringer would be nice. Foster and Goings have almost identical stats (6'0" 222-225 lbs), so one would think that the Panthers would go for a smaller, quicker RB as a change of pace (why I mentioned the 5'9" 201 lb Calhoun as a possibility.)

Vernon Davis won't be there for Carolina, but there's the possibility that Marcedes Lewis and/or Leonard Pope will be on the board at #27. Should they go TE over LB in the first round? You can make arguments both ways. Will Witherspoon (now with St. Louis) will need to be replaced, and the strong LB crop in this year's draft might make Carolina decide to focus on that position. We shall see...
