It's hard to say what will happen with the NFL as of this writing. It appears as if there will be no extension to the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement), meaning that the salary caps will not go up. There may be widespread cuts as a result. Pay close attention to your favorite news outlets for the latest.

I'll keep an eye on things as well, and if anything becomes apparent in relation to the NFL Draft with cuts, I'll do my best to get an update online.

Subject: Jets in the draft

Hey, I personally love your site and your insight on the draft, however, I personally disagree with the Jets taking Mario Williams with the fourth pick. Although they're currently shopping John Abraham, which would free up the starting spot at d-end, Bryan Thomas has so far been a proven player for them. I feel that if they don't trade up to get the Texans pick, they will snatch either Cutler or Young depending on their feelings on Cutler's impresive combine and Young's wonderlic test. This is especially after Chad's two surgeries on his shoulders, and if the no labor agreement is reached then the Jets will be left with out a quarterback.

Lou: I'm glad you enjoy the site. You are quite possibly right about the Jets, but the more I see, read and hear about Mario Williams, the more highly I think of him and his chances in the draft. Barring a trade, he won't go Top 3... but he is at least a possibility at #4.

It is possible that the Jets would consider taking Jay Cutler at #4, but their salary cap situation, even if there is a miracle, 11th hour NFL deal reached, is rough. Cutting Pennington would only net the team $3 million for this year, whereas a reworked deal could be much more cap beneficial, so I think he'll make it.

The Jets trading down and taking Cutler could happen, but I don't think it's likely given their financial situation. Taking a corner is not outside the realm of possibility, either. But considering finances and team needs, I think DE is the best fit of both factors at this point.

One other thing to consider: because of the questions with Pennington's health, it might be good for the Jets to find an older but squeezed out veteran (a la Brad Johnson in Minnesota) to bring in as a "backup" but who could be a steady starter if need be. The reality is that they might end up with the likes of Jon Kitna, but he would be someone with more NFL experience than a rookie coming right into the league.

Also, don't discount the possibility of D'Brickashaw Ferguson going at #4 to the Jets. Actually, it's a very good possibility, and might be the most likely thing to happen if the Jets stand pat. Especially since one of the salary cap victims was Jets OT Jason Fabini. Hmmm....
