The NFL mini-camps have started, and that means that Draft King is going to come out of its hibernation a bit. Things will really get going, though, once the NFL and college football seasons begin.

Hey Lou! Just wanted to drop a line after the 2006 Draft. The Lions seem to think they got their man in Ernie Sims. After a number of concussions I feel Matt's statement "its a non issue" is ludicrous. We got our safety in the second round. Most scouts had him rated 3rd Round tops.

We just missed out on the tackle I wanted as Winston Justice was chosen by Philly who traded up for him. Mark my words that pick was a steal. Mike Huff didn't last as I thought. We also missed out on Eric Winston who you mentioned on the web recently. I did like the Jonathan Scott pick at number 5. I liked Brian Calhoun but there were so many needs that I don't think we had the luxury of turning a 3rd round pick into a return specialist (Eddie Drummond) and third down back (Shawn Bryson, Artose Pinner).I mean what were these guys thinking. The kid from USC might be O.K. but these are the lower rounds anyway. Personally I would have traded down if I wasn't taking Leinhart or Cutler. Trust me we could probably picked up Sims later anyway. Just another typical Lions draft.

P.S. If Leon Hall is the best CB in next years draft the NFL is in trouble and hey, I watch U of M football.

Lou: I'm of the mindset that Ernie Sims was a strong pickup for Detroit. Concussions are nothing to be trifled with, but Sims was a player who could take over games on defense at Florida State. Detroit will have two very good LBs on the field if they can have both him and Boss Bailey healthy this year.

The free-fall of Jonathan Scott into the fifth round was one of those jaw-dropping, unexpected things that I still can't believe happened. He clearly has the physical tools to be a starting offensive tackle, and things like being too high in his stance for pass blocking can be corrected by coaches in camp. Any disappointment on missing out on Winston Justice should be tempered by knowing that Scott was still there for the Lions in the fifth round.

Brian Calhoun has very good hands, but you're right that he's most likely going to be a third round specialist. Opinions on him varied widely across the league.

As for Leon Hall, remember that this is very early for the 2007 Draft. Many times the corners who end up becoming first round picks the following year don't reveal themselves until they begin to perform on a week-in, week-out basis during the season.

Subject: Ahmad Brooks

do you think the Cleveland Browns will go after Ahmad Brooks in the supplemental draft?

Lou: Unless Romel Crennell sees a critical character flaw in Brooks, it would only make sense for the Browns to make a run at him. The question is: what round? The supplemental draft is a game of chicken in many ways when you have a player like this come along. Several teams would like to have Brooks, but they'd prefer to not squander a high pick to get him, particularly if they don't have to do so. The Wilmington Star speculates that he will go in the second round of the supplemental draft.

I've read some anonymous, scathing comments about Brooks recently that alleged all sorts of negative things about him from his time at the University of Virginia. However, I've also read about him dedicating himself to becoming an NFL player in the past two months, complete with a recent intense training regiment with Competitive Edge Sports in Atlanta.

Brooks fits best as an OLB in a 3-4. I've heard San Francisco mentioned as one team looking at him, but I've also heard that Miami (which runs a 4-3) is giving him consideration. And, as you might imagine, there are other teams looking but staying silent until July 13 (the day of the supplemental draft) arrives.
