Subject: Cowboys Draft options

hey man just another cowboys question. i was snooping around the internet at work and i came across the rivals.com mock draft. now i know making a mock draft is very difficult but they had some differnt picks. so just humor me here. they had the cowboys pickin up desean jackson with their ceveland pick and they had limas sweed falling back to round two so what are the chances they could get both now i now the boys need some defense to. but pickin up both those guys to take over for glenn and owens would be great in the future.

Lou: Rivals has a good mock draft -- you can check it out here. They, by and large, have similar views of many of the players as I do. Perhaps guys like Brandon Flowers and Gosder Cherilus and Derrick Harvey will end up as first round picks; I don't look at what they have and think, "Wow, I strongly disagree with that." They just anticipate things turning out a bit different than I do at the moment. That's the wonderful thing about pre-draft speculation; everyone has an opinion and can speculate as they like, and in many ways that's part of the fun.

As for Limas Sweed going in round two, it could happen. His wrist injury should have healed by the time the off-season workouts hit, but it's possible that he'll slip further than expected. I have my doubts about Early Doucet and Mario Manningham (especially Manningham) going before Sweed, but it's not an unreasonable idea.

As for DeSean Jackson going to the Cowboys, that is a possibility, though I would think that a taller receiver like Sweed would be a better fit for Dallas, particularly when the time comes for the team to part ways with 34-year-old Terrell Owens.

Dallas could have a NT in mind to take in round one, and they could decide to let it ride with what they have at receiver. Draft pundits have been predicting that Dallas will draft a receiver with a high pick for several years now, and that might not be in the cards in Dallas. Time will tell.

Dear Lou:
Love your mock draft. If the Patriots land Run DMC, there will be no need to videotape anyone else's stuff! ;)

Lou: The Spygate scandal cost New England their first round draft pick, but it has been amazing to see the Patriots play with such a chip on their shoulder. They don't let off the gas pedal, and the result has been nothing short of astounding. No matter how things end for them, history will look back on this team as something special. If they win it all, they will be listed among the all-time greats.

In the process of going 13-0, the Patriots have proven that they don't need to videotape opponent defensive signals to win... and win big. Add McFadden into the mix and the team becomes even stronger. If nothing else, the fact that Tom Brady has been to cover for injuries at RB has made his performance this year even more impressive, and the idea of having both Laurence Maroney and Darren McFadden in that backfield is interesting/scary, depending on your point of view.

My buddy Rob told me on Sunday that the Patriots are "like an army that must be stopped" and suggested that the other 31 teams in the league should band together to stop them at all costs. That seems excessive to me, and the Indianapolis and Baltimore games have proven that they are beatable, but there's no doubt in my mind that adding McFadden would make the team *much* more dangerous in 2008, and that's saying quite a bit.

1. New England will probably trade down in Round 1 & get an extra second round pick, instead of drafting McFadden. Asante Samuel, their top Corner, will be gone. 4 more Pats DB's are unsigned for the 2008 season.. I expect them to draft Malcolm Jenkins Jr CB Ohio St. Their biggest needs will be DB & Linebacker, not running back. Besides, do you really think they want to take the ball out of the hands of Tom Brady?? Doubtfull.

2. As for the 49ers, they need too much at too may positions. Hard to predict here. I would draft a pass rusher or OT. Fix the line 1st, before getting a WR.

Lou: I agree with your analysis of the Patriots' most likely needs, but the reality is that the Pats likely won't be able to trade down past #5 due to rookie salary cap challenges. Taking Jenkins that high would be a major stretch. It could play out that way, but it would surprise me for them to take Jenkins as opposed to a linebacker if they trade down.

As for the 49ers, they lost their high first round pick in the 2008 Draft because of trading up in the '07 Draft to acquire Joe Staley, so I doubt they'd take another offensive lineman in this draft with the Colts' pick. Perhaps WR won't be their area of interest, and there may be a solid 3-4 pass rusher to land, though Manny Lawson was great in the blitzing OLB role before injuring his knee and Patrick Willis has been outstanding in his ILB position.

The reality for San Francisco is that their offense has been atrocious, with the team dead last in passing yards per game and 29th in rushing. You're right that there are quite a few needs that need to be filled there, which makes pinning down a specific prediction difficult to do, but I'd suggest that WR is much more likely than OT as a first round target.
