The Saints had a phenominal run this year. However, all season long and in the post season, big plays just killed them. Which direction would the Saints go in this draft. They desperately need secondary help as they were burned quite often during the post season. And what is going to happen to Charles Grant (UFA) and Joe Horn considering he is 35 and is carring a 5 plus million cap number in 2007.

The Chiefs need help almost everywhere but they have issues now on offense. They seem to be too predictable and Larry Johnson needs help before he becomes another Earl Campbell. Which direction should they go in?

Great site. Keep up the good work.

Lou: The most telling sign of problems in the Saints' secondary game in New Orleans' game against the Bengals in the Superdome during the 2006 regular season. The Bengals, and in particular Chad Johnson, made the Saints deep coverage look very ineffective.

Depending on who is on the board at the time New Orleans picks, it's possible that the Saints could look CB. I'd think that they would be most likely to go OLB, but we'll see. Charles Grant is reported to be in negotiations with the Saints, and if he isn't signed to a new deal, I anticipate that the Saints will use the franchise tag on him.

As for Joe Horn, we'll know more about him soon. He's due a $1 million roster bonus in March, and it would reason that the Saints would cut him rather than take that hit (along with a $4.45 million base for 2007.) Missing nine regular season games in the past two seasons won't help his case in that regard.

I would expect the Chiefs to bring in a high end WR, be it through free agency or the draft. The middle rounds of the draft could provide Kansas City with a change-of-pace back to use, as Larry Johnson is definitely heading into Earl Campbell territory. Johnson is a bruising runner, and it would be wasteful for the Chiefs to burn him out when other options exist.

Also, the Chiefs might look at drafting a corner on day one. Ty Law and Patrick Surtain are both talented corners, but both are getting up there in NFL years, and taking a CB who is short on experience but long on talent might be a wise way to go.

Subject: Atlanta Falcons

Dear Lou,
You do a great job on the draft I have followed your site for a number of years and you do a great job. But I do not understand why the Falcons would draft Jamal Anderson, they just acquired Abraham and will surely resign Kerney and if they do not they might consider to draft Anderson but they have some other people that were able to stand in for Kerney even though he got hurt. I do believe the bulk of the problems are in the secondary. I have seen on other sites that people have the Falcons either having them take Laron Landry or Reggie Nelson. I understand that Landry is the better player right now because he started for 4 years at an SEC school but which has the higher ceiling and which one is the better fit in the Falcons secondary they have MIlloy and Crocker but Millow is old and Crocker struggled at times but seemed to do better towards the end. Is there anyway that the Falcons would draft for a total of four #1 wideouts Jarret if he is there because they seem to draft only the big play wideouts and do not have a possesion receiver in their offense as well as the fact that we have a new coach with a spread offense tendency?

Lou: What the Falcons do with Patrick Kerney will go a long way into determining what direction they take in the draft. They could franchise tag him, but that is an expensive way to go. If he is allowed to leave, the Falcons could take a run at one of the many potential free agents at DE. Additionally, Atlanta could decide to add some youth at DE and hope that they get a shot at either Jamaal (not Jamal the RB) Anderson or Gaines Adams.

Should Atlanta not be looking DE in round one, the Falcons would be wise to invest in their secondary. A great safety can make all the difference for a defense, and either LaRon Landry or Reggie Nelson would be an excellent addition to the Falcons. That's the most probable move for Atlanta to make, but if one of the two elite defensive ends falls to their spot, it could make the decision much trickier than it might appear at the surface.
