Subject: first to ask about next years draft... sort of

I know its a year away but I was wonder what your thought on a player like Danny Woodhead would be. Long story short, this coming fall he will break every major rushing record in college football. His career numbers will look be 8000+ rushing yards and 100+ touchdown. The thing is he plays for chadron state a small NAIA/ D-II school in western nebraska so his competition level is very low. He's small in stature, think bryan westbrook, so he didnt get much D-I attention but an opposing coach who formerly coached at nebraska said he would have started this year for nebraska. anyway, what does a small school player like woodhead have to do to get a look at the pros? Will anyone outside D-I go in the first round?

Lou: Woodhead is undersized (5'8" or 5'9" depending on who you ask), and coming from D-II Chadron State will put him at a major disadvantage. The 2,700+ rushing yards he posted in 2006 was impressive, and he could be a good role player in the NFL, but it will be almost impossible for him to crack the first round (let alone the first day) barring a very unexpected turn of events. Woodhead has good speed (an estimate 4.45 40) but the deck is stacked against him.

Subject: Lions at pick #2

I'm a longtime suffering Lions fan. I was wondering if its it worth them taking Calvin Johnson with the number 2 pick and the packiging one of there 4 Fifth Rounders and a higher round pick to move up and take the tackle from Central Michigan or should they be smart for once and take Joe Thomas from UW?

Lou: I'd think that the addition of George Foster would have shored up Detroit on the offensive line front, though with whispers hinting that the Lions might ship Foster out in another trade, perhaps Thomas is still under consideration.

Subject: Where do they go from here???

Love the site and I keep track of it constantly. About a month or so ago, we discussed where the Cowboys were going with their first-round draft pick. I thought they should go secondary and you had Dallas picking up Justin Blalock from Texas for quite some time. Now it seems that the Cowboys are on the verge of signing Leonard Davis to fill their need at tackle. So where do they go from here? Some mock drafts have them going for the wide receiver position. Personally, I think Terry Glenn, Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton fill that spot completely. Wouldn't it make more sense to get some defensive line help since Greg Ellis was hurt last season or even getting some help in the linebacking core??? Just curious.

Lou: With the Leonard Davis signing, Dallas added great depth to its offensive line and now certainly looks to be going in another direction in round one. Wide receiver is still a strong possibility, but by the same token I'd think that Wade Phillips would want to add a defensive line blitzer to bring the Dallas 3-4 toward what he had in San Diego with the Chargers strong D.

Subject: Vikes trade up for CJ

WR is obviously the greatest weakness of the vikings. I hate seeing drafts that have the vikes taking Brady Quinn, Dwayne Jarrett, and especially Ted Ginn Jr who reminds me way to much of Troy Williamson. What are the odds of the vikings making a smart decision and trading up for the best WR prospect to come out since the last freak they drafted?

Lou: There would seem to be positives to be gained on both sides by Minnesota trading up to #2 to get Calvin Johnson and Detroit moving down to #7 (and gaining whatever can be extracted from the Vikings.) Things making that tough: no guarantee that CJ will be on the board at #2, Detroit and Minnesota being in the same division, and the inherent difficulties of trading into and out of the top five.

With Minnesota already having a speed receiver in Troy Williamson, it would seem counter-intuitive for the Vikings to take Ted Ginn, Jr. It's possible that the Vikings will decide that Brady Quinn is too good to pass up at #7 if they stand pat, which might be another motivating factor motivating them to not trade up.

Subject: Calvin Johnson to Detroit?

Do you really think that Detroit will pull the trigger and go with Calvin Johnson at #2? I mean, jokes about WR's three straight years aside (which are SOOOO played out by the way), with Roy Williams and Mike Furrey, who were in the top of the league in yards and receptions for receivers, respectively, does Detroit really need another receiver this early in the draft? I mean, I would think that they would get one in a lower round, but at #2?

One more question... any plans on bringing back the running commentary this year? I have no idea why, but I thought it was great. Thanks!

Lou: With Kevin Curtis joining the Lions WR ranks, it really seems unlikely that the Lions will take Calvin Johnson. I have to give some thought to this tonight; projecting trades is something that I don't like to do, but realistically it would be very much in Detroit's best interest to trade down.

As for a running commentary, it may happen. I'm moving to Nashville next month, and hopefully I'll be in my new location by the time the draft weekend rolls around, but we'll see. It's more fun when I can work in comments from other people during it; my friend Scott (who was part of the 2004 Draft Commentary) is now in Seattle, but I'm sure I can work some others into the mix if I set things up right.

The only downside is saying things that proved to be way off, like hyping Rashaun Woods. Live and learn.

I see you now have the Panthers taking Greg Olsen....good man!
and You also have Miami taking Brady Quinn, 2 of my favorite teams, that would be a killer draft if that really happened

Lou: Olsen to Carolina looks like a very good fit. The Panthers do have other needs, but a speedy tight end would give the offense a strong shot in the arm. As for Brady Quinn to Miami, I thought at first that it was a smokescreen, but between Joey Harrington being cut and the continual rumbling out of Miami that Cam Cameron and company like Quinn, I believe it a great deal more than I did before.

Subject: What is this?

I’m embarrassed for you! Knowing the Lions history with the WR position, how could you even suggest that they would take Calvin J. He is a special player but, there’s about as much chance of that as there is Joe Thomas dropping to #5. You definitely aren’t establishing any credibility with that lineup. I’ll be willing to place $500 that Joe Thomas won’t last that long and that the Lions won’t use that pick on a WR. Millen would be run out of town! (Not like he shouldn’t have already been!). So being the only person to make that call out of “all” of the so called experts? Please explain that one to me.

Lou: The Lions' acquisition of George Foster would seem to make taking Joe Thomas a non-option for Detroit. With Foster and Jeff Backus, why would the Lions take an offensive tackle?

By the same token, I concur that the Lions wide receiver situation would make Calvin Johnson a poor choice, particularly with the Lions bringing in Kevin Curtis. But with CJ looking like such a "can't miss" elite prospect, I'd be really surprised if he managed to fall below the second spot in the draft. It might happen, and if so then it will be fascinating to see what happens with Cleveland (might the Browns take Johnson?), but no way he falls past Tampa Bay, I would think.

The reason I see Joe Thomas falling is because Detroit filled its OT need, and Cleveland spent big money to bring in Eric Steinbach (who could end up playing OT.) Thomas may end up going to the Bucs at #4, and that possibility would seem to make Arizona want to make a move with, of all teams, Detroit at #2 to secure Thomas.
